Diving and Snorkeling

SCUBA Diving (Winter)

Kalpitiya is a great place for Scuba Diving. Here we find rock and coral ridges running from North to South along the peninsula not far from the shore. Dive sites can range from 16 to 25 meters. These waters boast a great diversity of reef fish and oceanic fish as well. Common reef fish like anemone fish, butterfly fish, blue ring angel, various wrasse, napoleon wrasse, grouper, honeycomb moray, large marble rays, eagle rays and so much more can be spotted on or around the reef systems.

We work closely with Kalpitiya Discovery Diving (KDD), an officially registered PADI Center. They are located a short ride away and offer daily dives and PADI courses ranging from beginner Open Water to Divemaster.

The diving season starts end of October/early November and runs until April.

Snorkeling (Winter)

Bar Reef

The Bar Reef as it is called is one of Sri Lanka's largest coral reef systems and one of the largest in South Asia. The Bar Reef area was declared a Marine Sanctuary in 1992 and spans around 300 square km. In the winter season this is an excellent place for snorkeling. The waters are very shallow and warm and home to about 15+ species of coral and 280+ species of fish. The reef is accessible by boat and is about a 1 hour 20 minute boat ride away from our beach area.

The reef system is extremely fragile and currently under threat from unethical fishing practices, irresponsible tourism and climate change. If you visit, please be respectful and cautious with the coral as it can break easily and you can hurt yourself. We can gladly arrange a snorkeling tour for you with responsible boatmen and guides. There will be an additional Government fee to enter the Marine Park as well.
